More stupid (Vista) pet tricks...
so I installed Vista at home, and I wanted to, you know, get my shit back up and running. Practically my first step was, of course, Final Fantasy XI. So here's how it "went down":

- Spent $WAYTOOLONG fucking with Vista. Determined that Vista's supplemental driver pack had old, shitty drivers for my 9800 Pro. Rolled back to Vista's initially installed drivers. Aeroglass now looks awesometastic.
- Got on "teh intarweb" (thank you, supplemental driver pack).
- Proceeded along the GOD AWFUL LENGTHY INSTALL for POL+FFXI. I'm patching FFXI as we speak.
- Fired up POL, watched it patch, yawned a lot. It exited.
- Started POL. It told me I was running on an "unsupported operating system."
- 'Fuck You Square' emotions begin flowing out.
- Right-click POL shortcut, notice "Compatibility" tab, set to WinXP
- Fire up POL. It no longer gives me that retarded "I won't run on this OS because I'm stupid" message
- Instead it bitches about some patch bullshit
- Okay, fine, I uninstall / reinstall POL
- Notice that initially installed POL crashes when exiting after patch process
- Start patched POL. It emits the same bullshit about patches.
- Genius strikes. I copy over Meredith's C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\PlayOnlineViewer directory.
- Fire up POL. The shit works. It feels that I'm her though, and gets all "give me a password" on me. Whatever.
- POL decides it has corrupt files, patches itself (again) and restarts (again)
- POL works perfectly (shock), patching FFXI now.

I hope this gets indexed by some search engine so that the next poor bastard who tries to install FFXI on Longhorn/Vista doesn't get shit all over their face like I did. I do believe this can be made to work, despite Square being pricks. I'll know in the morning wherther or not FFXI works or needs similar cajoling.

Of course the alternate solution is to just not run a beta operating system on your home / gaming PC. But christ, it's new Windows. You only get to beta new desktop Windows every like.. five years (apparently) so why not enjoy it?

First of all, this was Vista B1 (note the date folks). Second of all, getting FFXI working in Vista B2 is way easier. Here is what I did, while all of it may not be required, it worked for me so it just might work for you:

- Install POL from CD.
- Configure POL to run in XPSP2 compat mode, admin privs
- Patch POL (this worked perfectly the first time)
- Install FFXI and expansions
- Configure FFXI launcher (type "final fantasy" into the search bar and this should be your first hit) to run in XP SP2 compat mode, wtih administrator privileges.
- Launched FFXI via said link, patched.
- Installed windower, tweaked. Again configured WIndower to run as above.

And it worked.

I'm working with RC1 (5600) and here's my findings:

1) Straight install from DVD didn't work.
2) Copying the directory from a previous PlayOnline install didn't work.

What did work (right now I'm updating POL) is copying just the newer executables (not the .dll's) from the updated directory, and overwriting the old executable with that file. I also disabled UAC (or LUA or whatever microsoft calls it), which seems to have gotten it past some strange "cannot write to HD" error.

Nevermind. After the update POL gives a "Cannot move version update files" and barfs. Back to XP.

I'm just posting here for posterity, but I was able to get past that error.

For some reason the POL is squeemish about copying .dll files out of its temp directory.

So you have to do it for it.

Copy all the .dll's from PlayonlineViewer\patchfiles\PlayonlineViewer\viewer\com to PlayonlineViewer\viewer\com

(there should be 2 dll's, app.dll and polcore.dll)

That got me up and running. Let's see how it goes.

This is Horcrux from Fenrir, and I just had the same problem, you're the only one who posted something that helped, so thank you so much.
